Pastoral da Criança celebrates 30 years of social action for the reduction of infant mortality
The preventive actions of health and nutrition of poor children done by the volunteers of Pastoral da Criança contributed decisively to reduce the infant mortality in the country in the last thirty years. In 2012, Brazil achieved one of the goals established by the United Nations (UN) in the document “Millennium Development Goals”. The current number of deaths is 16 per thousand live births, below the goal of 17.9 deaths per thousand, indicated by the UN and that should be achieved by 2015.

To aid poor child-bearing women and childrenl, the Pastoral da Criança (Child's Pastoral) articulates associations, agreements and receives donations. The natural or legal juridical persons who want to collaborate with the work of the Pastoral da Criança, in the areas of health, education, nutrition and citizenship, can look for in the nearest diocese where works the Pastoral da Criança.
Who we follow up
In Brazil, around 246,215 thousand volunteers, at the community level, each month follow up about 1,689,243 million of children, aged from zero to six years old plus pregnant women in their family and communities. In 40,853 communities children are weighed every month and the malnourished are treated and cared for.
Who we are
The Pastoral da Criança (Child's Pastoral) is a communitarian organization which acts nationally and internationally, whose work is based in human solidarity and knowledge sharing. The purpose of the work is the full development of the child, from the time he/she is conceived till he/she reaches six years old, within the context of the family and the community. This is done with preventive actions that strengthen the social tissue and promote the integration between the family and the community. The institution is ecumenical and is open for participation of people from all religions. It does not distinguish between race, complexion, gender, political choice or nationality. The main characteristic of the Pastoral da Criança is the voluntary work, performed mainly by the people of the community who instruct and guide on matters of health, nutrition, education and citizenship plus basic inter-actions in the communities.
Each volunteer of the Pastoral da Criança does more than just work with the families he/she follows up and monitors progress. He/she has a mission of Faith and Life, of Christian fellowship, love and social co-responsibility, contributing to the construction of a more fraternal and fair world, in service of Life and Hope.
Where we act
The Pastoral da Criança (Child´s Pastoral) is present in 40,853 poor communities of 4,016 municipalities in all states of Brazil. Above the Brazil, the Pastoral da Criança its spreads fruits in other19 countries: Africa; Angola, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique; Asia: Philippines and Timor Este; Latin America and Caribbean: Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala,Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The company Purific donates 500,000 oral rehydration solution spoons to Pastoral da Criança International
The partner of International Pastoral da Criança (Child´s Pastoral) called Purific, will produce 500,000 oral rehydration solution spoons in several languages. In January and February 2010 the first 40,220 spoons in Spanish were delivered.
These spoons will be distributed free of charge to poor families with children and pregnant women followed by the Pastoral da Criança in Latin America and the Caribbean countries. Along with the distribution, the leaders of Pastoral da Criança will instruct families how to prepare the solution and importance of its use to prevent dehydration.
The International Pastoral da Criança appreciates having Purific as partner in the effort to build a more just and fraternal society "so that all children may have life and have it abundantly" (John 10.10).
